State of play
The service is working fully but for the AIM transports and it is still using a self-signed certificate for SSL connections.
Registration is still closed until a bit more work is done.
I hope to have things ready for new users in the next week.
The Web Site is still down but the old web site will be replaced with something more functional.
Transports Status
The MSN and ICQ transports are now up and running.
There was a problem with the MSN transport which prevented registered users from connecting but this is now fixed.
The AIM transport is currently non-functional due to a break with a change of version for the supporting libraries. I can not provide an ETA on when this will be fixed at this point.
Outage update #2
Replacement hardware has now been sorted out and I expect to have the service back up and running in a basic form tomorrow evening (Tuesday).
Outage update #1
After checking over the server last night it looks as though the outage has been caused by a disk failure which will mean an extended downtime while I source a replacement.
The disk is still functioning to a degree, albeit spitting out streams of read errors, but I’ve removed it from the server so I can recover the data which should reduce the downtime but at best it will likely be early next week before I can get things back up and running.
I’m sorry for the further inconvenience.
Service outage
I am aware that the service is down again but unfortunately this is not due to work on the server.
I will need to gain physical access to determine the cause of this outage and attempt to recover it.
There is no ETA on when this will be possible at this point.
MSO Update #3
The MSN transport is now operational and as previously access is restricted to jabber.me.uk accounts.
The AIM transport will be next should all be well in the next 24 hours.
MSO Update #2
Progress in getting things back up has been slow, mostly due to a lack of time on my part. The MSN transport is not working correctly which has delayed things a little, I hope to get this working soon.
To improve stability on this service any unused accounts have been deleted from the database and some new policies have been introduced:
- User accounts inactive for 12 months will be removed
- User accounts with more than 500 offline messages will be removed after 6 months of inactivity
These policies will not impact regular users of the service who will offload their offline messages regularly but will benefit them greatly by improving the speed and reliability of the server by reducing the memory footprint making better use of resources.
MSO Update #1
The main Jabber service is back up and running. All transports/gateways are currently down.
As this outage was the first time the host server “Odin” had been powered off in 315 days, I took the opportunity to upgrade the OS and the Jabber daemon which I had been planning to do anyway. The server is now migrated to the new ejabberd2 which will provide some new features and facilities supporting a more modern set of Jabber standards.
As the software configuration has changed the application of the transports will be done individually to be sure that they are inter-operating as expected so this will take a number of days. I plan to install MSN first being the most popular, followed by ICQ and AIM last.
Yahoo IM will not be installed in the immediate future as it would not operate in a stable fashion on the last attempt, I will look into this again on the next version release.
Until the service is operating under normal conditions, new user registration is disabled.
Major Service Outage
Last week the JMUK server suffered a serious hardware failure which has taken the Jabber server offline over the weekend.
The Jabber service is currently offline however I expect it to be up in the next 24 hours.
Transports should be back by the end of the week.
The website may take longer to return to normality but this is currently a low priority.
While work is taking place to restore services there may be some brief disruptions in service.
I appreciate your patience at this time and I apologise for any inconvenience.
